Artificial thought belongs to artificial intelligence

Artificial intelligence has lost its full meaning. From the very beginning, researchers on artificial intelligence were too optimistic, without any adequate means to fulfill their goals. They made ambitious announcements, they induced false hope for easy success, they lost public confidence, they eventually lost public funds. The words "artificial intelligence" remained as a global label for many different topics and technologies, but goals shrank dramatically. The researchers focused on small steps, and then they obtained many more successes and crisp achievements. Many techniques have been explored, such as expert systems, neural networks, fuzzy logic... in more and more application domains. Internet gave a new boost on several kinds of artificial intelligence: search engines and data mining.
Artificial thought obviously belongs to artificial intelligence. Artificial thought is an implementation of human-like thinking process in a machine. A definition is compulsory before any attempt of specification. This definition shall be used as an unambiguous test: whether or not tested implementations are "real" artificial thinking machines. "Artificial thought" is used as a replacement word for "artificial intelligence". You may encounter "artificial consciousness" with a slight different meaning. Both try and give strong meaning to "thinking" and "consciousness". Is there thinking without consciousness? Does a chess bot really think when playing a game? Does a chatterbot really think when answering your questions (try it out)?

Thought definition

From a human point of view, no "real" thinking without self-consciousness. There are many steps leading to self-consciousness. Thinking is at least the ability to combine several assertions into another new assertion. If this ability applies to self description, then we approach self consciousness. Let us break down into separate topics. Self consciousness is dealt with in next chapter. Is human thought more or less similar to computing logical expressions? Yes, if you consider that each result is stored as a new expression.
Human thought is dynamic. We don't process two identical thoughts. For the second time we think at the same topic, we remember our first thought and this mere difference may slightly modify our point of view, not to mention occurring external experience constant flow.
