Consciousness
There are several levels of consciousness, from being woken from a deep sleep to being in acute concentration. Who knows if this acute concentration is the highest level of consciousness? Consciousness may be limited to a focused domain. Trapeze artists, for example, have got a high level of self awareness of their dynamic body balance. Consciousness is the ability of locating the continuum of present perceptions within a network of past experiences.

Self consciousness
Consciousness processes present feelings. Self consciousness deals with these present feelings and acknowledge them as being produced by a special entity: "Self". Memory helps reinforcing this entity.

Artificial consciousness
Artificial thinking comes first. Apply this thinking process to present "real time" situations and you get consciousness.
How to get self consciousness? Artificial self consciousness is relative to available senses. Self consciousness is the self perception of an artificial being interaction with its environment. This perception is directly linked to the accuracy of these senses.
